Tonight I joined the North Carolina State University’s Minority Association of Pre-Health Students for a discussion of public health. We had a great time…ok, I can only speak for myself. I had a great time answering their questions, sharing my pathways through public health positions and the many and myriad opportunities for them to contribute to their communities via public health.
To illustrate the need for multi-disciplinary approaches to complex health issues, we talked about some of the causes of obesity, a major public health issue. We mentioned factors that influence how people eat and/or exercise, including genetics, marketing practices, culture and the built environment.
We also talked briefly about how personal finances can affect meal choices. When fast or processed foods are cheaper, it is no wonder that some families rely on them. Some families have limited personal finances, which affects their dietary choices.
Here is an example of a nonprofit agency that helps improve access to nutritious meals for seniors and underserved families: http://www.ssnpweb.org/index.html.
Shasta Senior Nutrition Programs (SSNP) formed in 1979 to assist seniors in preserving their independence by providing Meals-On-Wheels and other meal assistance, social service and senior activities. SSNP operates as an independent nonprofit public benefit corporation under its parent company Mercy Medical Center Redding and Catholic Healthcare West.
MISSION STATEMENT:
Animated by a spirit of compassion, caring, and collaboration we provide nutritious meals and transportation and supportive services that promote and enhance the physical , social, and spiritual health of seniors and underserved families.
