One of my goals for this resource is to showcase the breadth of public health topics, disciplines and career opportunities. In case you haven’t noticed, here is my approach for post topics between specific questions.

To ensure that I don’t focus on the public health disciplines or fields that are most familiar to me, I cycle between seven areas, mostly in ABC order:

  • Biostatistics
  • Environmental sciences and engineering
  • Epidemiology
  • Health behavior and health education
  • Health policy and management
  • Maternal and child health
  • Nutrition

Across all of these disciplines, I share examples from different areas of the country and showcase local, state, US and international (global) examples. I also try to connect with current events as appropriate and current twitter trends as fun. Finally, I aim to feature a variety of public health issues, starting (but not ending) with the goals of Healthy People 2020.

In addition to disciplines, people searching for careers or wanting to know more about public health find it helpful to see examples of real people and organizations engaged in public health and addressing real health issues. So, each day has an assigned topic that I link to that day’s discipline:

  • Mondays: Public health in the news (PHiA – Public Health in Action)
  • Tuesdays: Programs or policies
  • Wednesdays: Advice/training
  • Thursdays: People/organizations
  • Fridays: Research
  • Saturdays: A day off
  • Sundays: Advice/Career tips

Of course, I can’t feature every aspect of public health and there are exceptions to every plan. This approach helps me be as expansive and interesting as possible.

And, if you would like some feedback on a specific issue, field, etc. Please let me know via a comment or email to [email protected]. I will gladly find information and resources on your specific interests or questions.
