Sometimes in the midst of the hustle and bustle of our busy lives, we forget or minimize the importance of our personal health practices. How many times have you put off improving your diet, re-starting your exercise regime or getting more sleep because of a REALLY important project, paper or something else you have to do?

I am not asking folks to have perfect diets, never miss a workout or to miss important deadlines. I am reminding us to make the pursuit of health (physical and mental well-being) as high a priority as the pursuit of other things. Don’t forget that being healthy (as healthy as you can be) can help you achieve other goals….perhaps especially when you are REALLY busy.

One of my challenges is getting enough regular sleep. So, I am trying some of these CDC tips (http://www.cdc.gov/features/sleep/).

  • Go to bed at the same time each night, and rise at the same time each morning.
  • Sleep in a quiet, dark, and relaxing environment, which is neither too hot nor too cold.
  • Make your bed comfortable and use it only for sleeping and not for other activities, such as reading, watching TV, or listening to music.
  • Remove all TVs, computers, and other “gadgets” from the bedroom.
  • Avoid physical activity within a few hours of bedtime.
  • Avoid large meals before bedtime.
